My Alkaline Diet

If you are even slightly familiar with the alkaline diet, you may have heard certain foods referred to as alkaline diet foods. But just what are alkaline diet foods? I wrote this article to help you to understand exactly what this term means.

To begin with, there are several related terms that have the same meaning as “alkaline diet foods.” I usually refer to these foods as “alkalizing foods,” but they can also be called “alkaline-forming foods,” “alkaline-producing foods,” or simply “alkaline foods.”

All of these terms refer to foods that make the body more alkaline. The term “alkaline ash” specifically refers to a test that is sometimes used to estimate how a food will affect the body’s pH. In this process, the food in question is actually burned. Then the remaining ash is tested to determine its pH.

Why not simply measure the pH of the food in its raw, natural state? The problem with that idea is that acidic food doesn’t always make the body more acidic, nor does alkaline food always made the body more alkaline. One of the reasons that some foods have an acidifying effect on the body is that they are rich in organic acids. Confusingly, however, other types of organic acids can be metabolized, or broken down, and therefore do not have any affect on the body’s pH.

So why do alkaline diet foods have an alkalizing effect? These alkaline foods have this effect because they are rich in alkaline minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Of these minerals, potassium has the most important effect on the body’s pH. And because the richest sources of potassium are fresh fruits and vegetables, these foods are emphasized on the alkaline diet.

Of course, potassium isn’t the only benefit of fruits and vegetables. These natural foods are also some of the best sources of other minerals, plus vitamins and beneficial phytochemicals. They’re also excellent for weight loss, since they are high in fiber but low in calories.

Normally the pH of human body should be around 7.36 to 7.44. It is very necessary to keep this balance. When your body contains excess acid, this acidic effect tends to disturb your body’s balance and various bodily functions. When this happens, your body automatically tries to maintain the alkaline-acid balance by absorbing the minerals, as minerals are a very good source of alkaline. But if your diet is not properly balanced to give you the required amount of alkaline, acid formation inside your cells will take place.

In today’s fast-paced world, people do not have enough time to follow a healthy alkaline diet plan, and they think that a balanced diet means eating proper amount of calories per day. Just a few people know the importance of acid-base balance. Surveys have shown that to maintain acid-alkaline balance in your body, your diet should contain 60% alkaline diet foods and 40% acid foods. But when your body balance is disturbed and you have to get it back, then you have to take foods having 80% alkaline and 20% acid. Importance of this balance can be evaluated from the example that a blood pH of 6.9, which is slightly acidic, could cause death.

It is a medical fact that when we eat anything, it goes to our stomach and after digestion, it becomes either acid or alkaline in effect. So the balance of our body is dependent on the food we eat. Therefore, it is very important for a person to know about the importance of alkaline diet foods and the alkaline diet resources that are available.

If we do not take care of our acid alkaline balance, our body can get too acidic due to the number of acidic foods we eat, and this will cause a lot of problems. First it will prevent your body from storing and using minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, and others. These minerals are very essential for your body’s functioning and their absence will cause many types of diseases and illnesses.

Although some doctors (conventional or traditional doctors) do not believe in the acid-alkaline theory and do not advise to eat fruits and vegetables which are rich in alkaline instead of meat and other acidic things, even conventional studies have proved that eating fruits and vegetables provide strength and balance to the body. An acidic condition of the body also causes some severe chronic diseases like headaches, lack of energy, weakness, frequent flu and cold, anxiety and others.

Alkaline diets also prevent the formation of kidney stones, muscles wasting, and osteoporosis. Now getting into the resources, almost all natural plant foods like fruits are alkaline in nature. Although some of them are acidic, exceptions are everywhere. Avoid eating too much meat, salt, grains and especially canned fruits and vegetables as they are highly acidic. On the other hand, lemon and watermelon are highly alkaline in nature. Milk, eggs, yogurt and ice creams are acidic in nature. You should also avoid using too much coffee and other soft drinks are they are also mostly acidic in nature.
