What is an alkaline diet food? What makes a food alkalizing? How can I make sure I’m getting enough alkaline diet food in my diet to have a healthy acid-alkaline balance? This article will answer these common questions about the alkaline diet.

To begin with, the term “alkaline diet food” is synonymous with “alkaline-forming food” and “alkalizing food.” Many people also use the phrase “alkaline food” to refer to foods that increase the body’s alkalinity. However, I prefer to avoid the term “alkaline food,” which can be confusing.

To consider one example, all types of vinegar are acidic when their pH is measured in the kitchen or laboratory. Most kinds of vinegar also have an acid-producing effect on the body. But apple cider vinegar actually makes the body more alkaline. As you can see, it’s a mistake to assume that all acidic foods make the body more acidic, or that all alkaline foods make the body more alkaline. For this reason, I prefer to use the term “alkalizing” to describe foods that make the body more alkaline.

As for the second question, the factor that makes a food alkalizing is the presence of alkalizing minerals. These minerals include calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. While all these minerals are essential for health, potassium has the largest effect on acid-alkaline balance.

It is interesting to note that our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed more potassium than we do, thanks to their heavy consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. At the same time, they consumed dramatically less sodium. The average hunter-gatherer consumed around 700 mg of sodium per day. In contrast, the average American consumes four to eight times that amount. Therefore, even though sodium is an alkalizing mineral, it would be a bad idea to try to alkalize your body by adding more salt to your food.

Instead, you should focus on increasing your consumption of alkaline diet food, such as potassium-rich fruits and vegetables. This will help to alkalize your body at the same time it will reduce your risk of high blood pressure and water retention by improving your sodium-potassium ratio.
