My Alkaline Diet

What is an alkaline diet food? What makes a food alkalizing? How can I make sure I’m getting enough alkaline diet food in my diet to have a healthy acid-alkaline balance? This article will answer these common questions about the alkaline diet.

To begin with, the term “alkaline diet food” is synonymous with “alkaline-forming food” and “alkalizing food.” Many people also use the phrase “alkaline food” to refer to foods that increase the body’s alkalinity. However, I prefer to avoid the term “alkaline food,” which can be confusing.

To consider one example, all types of vinegar are acidic when their pH is measured in the kitchen or laboratory. Most kinds of vinegar also have an acid-producing effect on the body. But apple cider vinegar actually makes the body more alkaline. As you can see, it’s a mistake to assume that all acidic foods make the body more acidic, or that all alkaline foods make the body more alkaline. For this reason, I prefer to use the term “alkalizing” to describe foods that make the body more alkaline.

As for the second question, the factor that makes a food alkalizing is the presence of alkalizing minerals. These minerals include calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. While all these minerals are essential for health, potassium has the largest effect on acid-alkaline balance.

It is interesting to note that our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed more potassium than we do, thanks to their heavy consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. At the same time, they consumed dramatically less sodium. The average hunter-gatherer consumed around 700 mg of sodium per day. In contrast, the average American consumes four to eight times that amount. Therefore, even though sodium is an alkalizing mineral, it would be a bad idea to try to alkalize your body by adding more salt to your food.

Instead, you should focus on increasing your consumption of alkaline diet food, such as potassium-rich fruits and vegetables. This will help to alkalize your body at the same time it will reduce your risk of high blood pressure and water retention by improving your sodium-potassium ratio.

If you are even slightly familiar with the alkaline diet, you may have heard certain foods referred to as alkaline diet foods. But just what are alkaline diet foods? I wrote this article to help you to understand exactly what this term means.

To begin with, there are several related terms that have the same meaning as “alkaline diet foods.” I usually refer to these foods as “alkalizing foods,” but they can also be called “alkaline-forming foods,” “alkaline-producing foods,” or simply “alkaline foods.”

All of these terms refer to foods that make the body more alkaline. The term “alkaline ash” specifically refers to a test that is sometimes used to estimate how a food will affect the body’s pH. In this process, the food in question is actually burned. Then the remaining ash is tested to determine its pH.

Why not simply measure the pH of the food in its raw, natural state? The problem with that idea is that acidic food doesn’t always make the body more acidic, nor does alkaline food always made the body more alkaline. One of the reasons that some foods have an acidifying effect on the body is that they are rich in organic acids. Confusingly, however, other types of organic acids can be metabolized, or broken down, and therefore do not have any affect on the body’s pH.

So why do alkaline diet foods have an alkalizing effect? These alkaline foods have this effect because they are rich in alkaline minerals, including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, and sodium. Of these minerals, potassium has the most important effect on the body’s pH. And because the richest sources of potassium are fresh fruits and vegetables, these foods are emphasized on the alkaline diet.

Of course, potassium isn’t the only benefit of fruits and vegetables. These natural foods are also some of the best sources of other minerals, plus vitamins and beneficial phytochemicals. They’re also excellent for weight loss, since they are high in fiber but low in calories.

Vegetable juices and smoothies are two of my favorite kinds of alkaline diet recipes. These beverages are absolutely delicious, easily digested, and contain the ingredients your body needs for nourishment. The alkaline diet recipes below are extremely rich in vitamins, minerals and nutrients, all in something that tastes great.

Vegetable juice is an excellent resource for building the blood and cleansing the body. For best results, use a juicer, although if one is not available, a blender can be used instead. Celery yields a mild-tasting juice that can help dilute strong-tasting vegetables, like dandelion greens and kale. Although I generally recommend avoiding fruit juices because they are relatively high in sugar, it’s fine to add a few apples to sweeten the vegetable juice.

The alkaline diet recipes for the following fruit smoothies are absolutely fantastic. When making the smoothie, make enough for only one use at a time. Making more than you can consume in a day will cause you to lose a large majority of their nutritional benefits. For added variety, adding a little ginger to any of the following recipes will do wonders for increasing the circulation.

Apple-Pineapple Smoothie

In a blender, mix four cups of apples, a half of a pineapple, one mango, two each of plums and bananas, and four cups of ice cubes. Blend until it reaches a smooth consistency. This recipe is enough for two large smoothies.

Ginger-Plum Smoothie

Blend until smooth two each of plums and oranges, a piece of ginger about two inches thick, one half of a pineapple, a kiwi, and four cups of ice cubes. Blend until smooth and enjoy. This recipe will also make two large smoothies.

Blueberry-Mango Smoothie

Use three apples, two each of bananas and plums, one cup of blueberries, and one each of peach, lemon, and mango. Blend with four cups of ice cubes until desired smoothness. This smoothie is so delicious it is hard to only drink one glass.

Green Smoothie

The green smoothie is one of the most powerful alkaline diet recipes. It tastes good and will give you more healthy energy than the pot of coffee you normally drink. In a blender, mix one cup of blueberries, two bananas, two hefty handfuls of spinach or kale, one handful of seaweed or kelp, three tablespoons of wheat grass juice, one cup of fresh spring water, and ice cubes. Blend until completely mixed and smooth, adding additional ice cubes if needed. Drink one glass each morning to get a healthy start to the day.

These are only four of the delicious alkaline diet recipes that are available for utilizing the benefits of the alkaline diet. Use a variety of fruits and green leafy vegetables to find your own favorite drink. Do not use already made juices for the fruit juice, as they are not as beneficial as blending whole fruit.

There is no doubt that the alkaline diet has turned many lives around and helped many people drop tons of weight and actually keep it off. The biggest problem for some followers is that they aren’t quite sure how to create a satisfying alkaline diet menu when they first get started with the plan.

When you first look at the foods that should be avoided on this plan it does seem quite intimidating. Give up fried foods and sugary baked goods? It does seem nearly impossible if your routine diet is filled with these things, but the alkaline diet is actually extremely easy to follow once you learn how to design a alkaline diet menu with meals that are both fast and delicious.

Most people eat the same things over and over, even if they are not on a diet. This means it isn’t all that hard to create an alkaline diet menu that you really enjoy and find yourself satisfied the majority of the time. When you crave something different, explore online and find a new recipe or come up with your own alkaline recipes!

The Daily Salad

On a busy day when you won’t have much time to cook, you can make one large salad to last the entire day. You will of course not be satisfied with a basic garden salad so throw in all the alkalizing vegetables you have in the kitchen plus avocado, nuts, and seeds.

Frozen Meals

For the most part, prepackaged foods do not make for the best alkaline diet menu, but the alkaline diet is much easier to follow if you keep a few frozen meals in the freezer for nights you are too exhausted or pressed for time to cook a meal.

You want to look for frozen meals that include very little to no meat and cheese. Then add a generous helping of salad or steamed vegetables on the side, creating a healthy and satisfying alkaline meal in just minutes.

While low-carbohydrate plans have practically turned the potato into the devil in many dieters’ minds, potatoes are actually healthy alkalizing foods. True, they are a bit more caloric than non-starchy vegetables, but even people who want to lose weight can eat potatoes in moderation. Get creative and learn to create a delicious alkaline diet menu that includes white potatoes, as well as sweet potatoes and yams.

Quick Snacks

Keep fresh vegetables and fruits all chopped up and ready to eat in your fridge at all times. When you need a quick snack or will need something to take with you to get through between-meal hours, they will always be there to grab on the run. You can also use dried fruits as on-the-go snacks.

You can also use fresh fruit to blend into smoothies or add to plain yogurt as a delicious snack. Nuts and dried fruit are great mixed with plain yogurt as well. (Yogurt is mildly acidifying, but it can be part of the 20 to 35 percent of total calories that it’s okay to get from acidifying foods.)

These tips should get you thinking creatively about how to create a convenient alkaline diet menu that will satisfy you both physically and mentally. Keeping snacks ready and always on hand will be a big key to sticking with the alkaline diet long term because it avoids those moments where you need something fast and grabbing something unhealthy is the only option.

The ability to create one big salad for the entire day will also turn into a diet-saver on those days you are too pressed for time to think about what you are eating. Prepare the salad in the early morning and there is no question what’s on your plate for the day!

Because of today’s lifestyle which is often referred to as the “rat race,” one of the things that suffers most is our diet. We end up eating foods that are easy to buy (a.k.a. fast food), but which are not always appropriate for our overall wellbeing. The result is short-term and long-term health problems. Yet all that was needed was an alkaline diet plan to save us those mountains of medical bills and a lifetime of physical discomfort. If there is one thing that is common with the foods that are harmful to the body, it is in their level of acidity. The body needs a healthy balance between acidic and alkaline nutrients, to enable it to function at its optimum. In fact, the body’s pH level (or level of acidity/alkalinity) tilts slightly more towards alkalinity. It is unfortunate that many of the meals we eat today, especially processed foods, are mostly acidic after they are digested by the body.

The good news, though, is that just like one can fix the pH level of a swimming pool, so can the human body’s pH; one can turn an acidic body into an alkaline body. For the human body, the best way to correct this is by changing your current meal plan into an alkaline diet plan by introducing certain foods that are naturally alkaline. Even though this will not result in an overnight change of the body’s pH level, its results will be apparent if one keeps at it.

Foods that one can use to alter body pH through an alkaline diet plan include Lemon, Lime, Avocado, Tomato, Grapefruit, Watermelon, Rhubarb, Almonds, Pumpkin, Sunflower, Sesame, Flax, spelt, Lentils, Cumin Seeds, Sprouted Seeds, Asparagus, Artichokes, Cauliflower, Radish, Swede, Cabbage, Lettuce, Onion, Spinach, Turnip, Chives, Garlic, Carrots, Green Beans, Beetroot, Celery among others. On the other hand, increasing alkalinity must be accompanied by a reduction in the intake of acid-rich or acid-causing foods like carbonated drinks, vinegar, white breads, white pasta, mayonnaise, coffee, beer and foods containing saturated fats.

One must be careful of course not to go to the other extreme and end up with a hyper alkaline body. Remember that moving into an alkaline diet plan does not mean neglecting all foods that are acidic. Nutritionists have long known that many foods we know to be acidic, actually transform into an alkaline state once they go through the digestion process. Good examples of these types of foods are oranges and lemons. These citrus fruits contain citric acid when in their raw form but are converted into alkalis as they go through the digestive tract.

Checking one’s pH level is no longer that difficult. There are strips available at your local medicine store just that can help you determine your body’s pH levels. A number of websites now also provide a section where one can do an alkalinity test online. This is done by using data that the end user enters as relates to their diet to come up with an estimate. This will of course have a significant margin of error due to the limited amount of information one can provide to the website and the widely varying acid and alkali content of different specimen of the same food type.

Acid alkaline diets are the exact opposite of the Atkins diets. Atkins diets contains a lot fats and proteins but a very less amount of carbohydrates. Atkins diets are a very poor source of energy and they have left a very bad effect on our body. On the other hand, the acid alkaline diets are a rich source of energy. They are also useful for losing weight and the proper functioning of all the body parts.

By using acid alkaline diets, the pH level of the body remains balanced, and so acid alkaline diets are very helpful in preventing disease. These types of diets are also useful in the cure of many diseases. The origin of the acid alkaline diets is in the fact that the ideal pH level of our body is 7.3. This is actually alkaline in nature and helps the body parts to work in a proper manner. But if the pH level goes slightly towards the acidic side then it causes trouble and body parts can’t work properly.

As our body is alkaline in nature so the food we eat should also be alkaline and the acidic foods are eaten to maintain that level. But the majority of foods are alkaline. Since the vegetables and fruits are alkaline in nature, we have to use them and cut short the use of meat and oily foods. The foods containing large amount of fat are very harmful. They increase the cholesterol level of the body and the alkaline foods such as fruits and vegetables play a vital role in controlling the amount of fats in the body.

When the level of the body’s alkaline minerals such as calcium, magnesium and potassium goes down, then there is danger to our health. The body starts losing energy and we feel tired all the time. When the alkaline level is low in our body, resistance against diseases lessens and our body is attacked by different germs, causing many different type of diseases. An acid alkaline diet contains 80% alkaline food and only 20% of acidic, as the acidic foods are harmful for our body.

An acid alkaline diet in not only used to lose weight but it is also helpful in regaining the lost health and we can enjoy a healthy and a disease-free life. Acid alkaline diets are also useful for the people who feel tired all the time as they provide a lot of energy to the body. Acid alkaline diets work as a medicine in regards to stress and low energy level. They work as a safeguard for many viral diseases. Acid alkaline diets are also useful for diseases like headache, muscle pain and joint pain.

So by using the acid alkaline diets we can easily enjoy a healthy life. These types of diets help our body preventing the diseases. It is a very balanced diet plan if we use the acid alkaline diets in a proper way and also in the proper ratio.

In our daily life, most people try to balance their diets in terms of calories, but mostly they do not pay attention to the alkaline level of their bodies. In fact, most people completely ignore the importance of the alkaline level in the body. Generally the pH of our body is around 7.36 to 7.44. pH is the measurement of acid-alkaline balance strength. The reason for the alkaline diet is obvious from the pH of our body, since our body is slightly alkaline and thus we need alkaline food to maintain it and keep our body in a slightly alkaline condition.

In general life, most people downplay the importance of alkaline diet food. Even many traditional doctors do not believe in the importance of alkaline food. But studies have shown that bodies which are acidic tend to disturb almost every system of the body and lead us to several defects like low energy, stress, cold, weak nails and hair, headaches, muscles pain, and several other painful and dangerous diseases. Excess acidity in our body also blocks certain minerals from storage and eventually, these minerals become unavailable.

To get a good alkaline diet, you should have a proper knowledge about which products have alkalinity in them, and also the amount you should use to keep you body in good balanced condition. Here are the some important facts about the alkaline foods and their percentage. This information could be used as an alkaline diet chart to help you choose the right alkaline foods.

First, talking about alkaline fruits, there is a long list of them. Talking about more common you can get apple, apricot, speckled bananas, watermelons, tomatoes, melons of all kind, grapefruits, guavas, coconut, dates, cherries, pomegranates, olives, oranges and papaya, pears, mangoes, loquats and limes. People having any acidic effects in their body should avoid preserved and canned fruits, also which are dried or sugared. Sour cherries, plums, prunes, and cranberries contain benzoic acid and oxalic acid in it.

Vegetables like bamboo shoot, barley grass, celery, chicory, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, garlic, ginger, peeper, peas, potatoes, okra, onions, mustard green, most varieties of mushrooms, spinach, alfalfa, cowslip, dulce, edible flower, cabbage, sea vegetables, wheat grass and many other vegetables have an alkaline effect, and can be used as a source for alkalinity. On the other hand, acidic vegetables are dried beans, corn, asparagus, lentils and garbanzos. You should avoid these acidic vegetables if you are too acidic.

In oriental vegetables, maitake, daikon, dandelion root, shitake, kombu, nori, umeboshi, wakame and reishi are alkaline in nature. Besides fruits and vegetables there are also many other sources of alkaline like almond, Chestnuts, Millet, Tofu, Tamari, and sea salt or table salt. Also there are some minerals which are alkaline in nature and in medical terms, they are also very important for the proper growth and functioning of the body.

Wheat, cream, pickles, corn bread, cereals, corn flakes and other such things should be avoided as they have a very low pH, around 6 to 6.5, and therefore cause a disturbance in the acid-alkaline balance of the body.
