It is interesting to note that our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed more potassium than we do, thanks to their heavy consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. At the same time, they consumed dramatically less sodium. The average hunter-gatherer consumed around 700 mg of sodium per day. In contrast, the average American consumes four to eight times that amount. Therefore, even though sodium is an alkalizing mineral, it would be a bad idea to try to alkalize your body by adding more salt to your food.

Instead, you should focus on increasing your consumption of alkaline diet food, such as potassium-rich fruits and vegetables. This will help to alkalize your body at the same time it will reduce your risk of high blood pressure and water retention by improving your sodium-potassium ratio.

Of course, potassium isn’t the only benefit of fruits and vegetables. These natural foods are also some of the best sources of other minerals, plus vitamins and beneficial phytochemicals. They’re also excellent for weight loss, since they are high in fiber but low in calories.

These beverages are absolutely delicious, easily digested, and contain the ingredients your body needs for nourishment. Blend until smooth two each of plums and oranges, a piece of ginger about two inches thick, one half of a pineapple, a kiwi, and four cups of ice cubes. Blend until smooth and enjoy. This recipe will also make two large smoothies.

Use three apples, two each of bananas and plums, one cup of blueberries, and one each of peach, lemon, and mango. Blend with four cups of ice cubes until desired smoothness. This smoothie is so delicious it is hard to only drink one glass.

Green Smoothie

The green smoothie is one of the most powerful alkaline diet recipes. It tastes good and will give you more healthy energy than the pot of coffee you normally drink. In a blender, mix one cup of blueberries, two bananas, two hefty handfuls of spinach or kale, one handful of seaweed or kelp, three tablespoons of wheat grass juice, one cup of fresh spring water, and ice cubes. Blend until completely mixed and smooth, adding additional ice cubes if needed. Drink one glass each morning to get a healthy start to the day.

One must be careful of course not to go to the other extreme and end up with a hyper alkaline body. Remember that moving into an alkaline diet plan does not mean neglecting all foods that are acidic. Nutritionists have long known that many foods we know to be acidic, actually transform into an alkaline state once they go through the digestion process. Wheat, cream, pickles, corn bread, cereals, corn flakes and other such things should be avoided as they have a very low pH, around 6 to 6.5, and therefore cause a disturbance in the acid-alkaline balance of the body.
